Justice Byron St. Michael Hylton QC

The Hon. Mr. Justice Byron St. Michael Hylton QC has been appointed to act as Judge of the Supreme Court from 1st July, 2022 – 31st August, 2022.

Justice Hylton QC has practiced law for more than 40 years in Jamaica, primarily as a commercial litigator. He served as Solicitor General of Jamaica from 2001 to 2007, when he returned to private practice. He has extensive experience and expertise in complex commercial matters, especially those involving financial institutions and instruments, constitutional and administrative law, taxation and intellectual property.

Justice Hylton QC taught at the Norman Manley Law School for more than 30 years (first, the Law of Evidence and then Civil Practice and Procedure), and has chaired numerous public and private sector companies and committees. He has served as chairman of the General Legal Council (for 2 terms), a member of the Rules Committee of the Supreme Court of Jamaica and chairman of the sub-committee primarily responsible for drafting Jamaica’s Civil Procedure Rules. He is currently a member of the Regional and Judicial Services Commission, the administrative arm of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), responsible for hiring and the disciplining of judges of the CCJ. He also served as a director and chairman of the Financial Services Commission, the Caribbean Financial Action Taskforce and the Civil Aviation Authority.

 In commenting on  Justice Hylton QC appointment, Managing Partner Mark Fulford stated that he welcomed the good news of having a Civil Judge appointed to temporarily fill the void left by the retirement of the first Turks and Caicos Islander Judge- Justice Simmons QC.
